No Body Criminalized

Welcome to No Body Criminalized, a Podcast about Reproductive Justice

Episode Notes

In each episode of this series, Rafa Kidvai of the Repro Legal Defense Fund at If/When/How interviews experts about how policy in the U.S. is used to control and surveil the decisions people make about their own bodies. From the way parole limits someone’s access to their family, to the impact education has on how children learn about bodily autonomy … this podcast highlights stories and analysis from the intersection of the reproductive justice movement and the state’s targeting of marginalized communities in the U.S.

If you have questions about your legal rights or access to abortion, go to the Repro Legal Helpline or call 844-868-2812. If you are being criminalized for something that happened during a pregnancy, go to reprolegaldefensefund.org

Episode Transcription

Rafa Kidvai: Who you are and where you live determines how much of your body and community may be monitored without your knowledge or consent…

Pilar Weiss: The criminalization is the point at which then you are tracked, you are detained, you are incarcerated, you are punished.

Kidvai: Through laws and policies designed to criminalize our control of our own bodies.

Chase Strangio: This is about criminalization of bodies. It's not just going to get the care. It's not just going to the drag performance. It's existing in your body.

Kidvai: No Body Criminalized explores how the state controls our bodies, families, and communities. I’m Rafa Kidvai, director of If/When/How’s Repro Legal Defense Fund. Welcome to our first season. On this podcast, I’ll be talking to people whose daily work intersects with reproductive justice, state surveillance, and the criminal legal system’s targeting of marginalized people. Our reproductive lives are a part of a wider matrix of oppression–my guests and I will look at how.

Oriaku Nkoju: Criminalized, stigmatized… no body should have to experience anything that creates that fear.

Kidvai: Hear how their work is building a world where everyone can care for themselves and their families in safe and sustainable communities. And be inspired by the resilience of those fighting for a world where everybody is free from criminalization. Listen to No Body Criminalized wherever you listen to podcasts.
